November-December 2014

The designer was introduced to a local non-profit organization in Washington Height. CLOTH, Community League of The Height has a vacant lot of 22x100 feet on West 158th Street and they want to create a community space that provides sustainability, recreation, and education. Since the lot is very lack of light, the designer immediately came up with the idea of planting a fast growing, economical, and healthy produce like mushroom in the lot. However, Washington Height has large portion of immigrant Dominican with local sophisticated cuisine, of which mushroom as never been part of the ingredients. Therefore, the biggest challenge is how make the new ingredients such as mushroom become acceptable in local cuisine. Having gone through many criticisms and discouragements, the designer had to take a step back and look at the wholes of the projects and reframed the research plan.
